Setting up an IKE in Greece: step by step
The IKE is the most popular vehicle for new businesses in Greece: flexible, with no minimum capital and a fully online setup. Here is the process, step by step.
The Private Company (IKE) combines the flexibility of a partnership with the protection of limited liability. It is the most common choice for founders starting today.
What an IKE is and why choose it
Partner liability is limited to the capital contributed. There is no minimum capital, so it can start with as little as 1 euro. It recognises three types of contribution: capital, non-capital (for example work or know-how) and guarantee contributions.
Before you start
- One or more partners (a single-member IKE is allowed).
- A registered seat for the company.
- TaxisNet credentials for the partners and the manager.
- Your activity codes (KAD).
The steps via e-YMS (one-stop service)
Formation is done almost entirely online through the electronic one-stop service (e-YMS), with no in-person visits.
1. Log in and choose the type
Sign in to e-YMS with TaxisNet credentials and select “Set up IKE”.
2. Articles of association
Use the standard template (faster) or upload your own if you need special arrangements.
3. Partner and capital details
Enter partners, shares, contributions and the manager, along with the required declarations.
4. Fees
Pay the formation fees online (roughly 60 to 100 euros) and the GEMI registration fee (roughly 10 euros).
5. Tax number and GEMI number
Using the template articles, the company usually receives a GEMI number and a tax number (AFM) within 1 to 3 working days.
After formation
- Activate details with the tax office and start activity.
- Register the manager/partners with EFKA where required.
- Open a business bank account.
- Set up accounting and books.
Common mistakes
- Wrong or incomplete activity codes.
- A rushed articles document with no provision for partners joining or leaving.
- No partner agreement on roles and shares.
Procedures and fee amounts change. Confirm the current details or ask for guidance before you proceed.
