From family business to organised company

Strategy & Growth

Family businesses are the backbone of the Greek economy. But to grow, at some point they have to become organised companies.

What got you here is not what takes you further. Moving from a family business to an organised company does not remove the family character. It adds the structure that allows growth.

Why the shift is needed

As long as everything runs through the owner, the business cannot scale and stays fragile. Organisation reduces dependence, improves decisions and makes the company more resilient.

The steps

  1. Separate family roles from company roles.
  2. Build an org chart with clear responsibilities.
  3. Document core processes so they do not live in one head.
  4. Put basic governance in place: regular meetings, metrics, decisions backed by numbers.
  5. Plan succession early.

Common obstacles

  • Confusion between ownership and management.
  • Resistance to delegating responsibility.
  • Decisions driven by emotion instead of data.
