KPIs every SME should track
You do not need dozens of reports. You need a few of the right metrics that tell you whether the business is healthy and where to focus.
Most small and mid-sized businesses either track no KPIs at all, or drown in numbers that mean nothing. The goal is a small dashboard you look at every month and act on.
The metrics that matter for an SME
Cash flow and runway
How much cash comes in and goes out, and how many months it lasts. It is the single most critical survival metric.
Gross margin
What is left after direct costs. It shows whether your model is viable before we even talk about overheads.
Break-even
The revenue you need to avoid a loss. You should know it by heart.
Sales and pipeline
Not only revenue booked, but revenue coming: quotes, opportunities, conversion rate.
Customer acquisition cost
What it costs to win a new customer versus the value they bring.
Days sales outstanding
How long customers take to pay you. Profitable businesses run out of cash exactly here.
How to use them
Pick 5 to 7 metrics, put them on one dashboard and run a steady monthly review. What matters is not perfect measurement but consistency and the action that follows.
